Tragedy as girl, 16, ‘dies while taking part in dangerous Scarf Game on TikTok’

A teenager from France has died after she reportedly tried a dangerous ‘blackout challenge’ on TikTok which resulted in her suffocation.

Christy Sibali Dominique Gloire Gassaille, 16, died on May 27 allegedly after playing the ‘Scarf Game’ at her home, Jam Press reports.

The dangerous pursuit involves fastening cloth around the neck to asphyxiate oneself until passing out for alleged internet clout.

The online game can result in low levels of oxygen to the brain, causing seizures, serious injury and even, death.

Following Christy’s death last month, the teenager was buried at the Fleury les Aubrais cemetery, near her home in Orléans, France, on 7 June.

She was originally from the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

It follows various other deaths from young people which reportedly occurred after trying challenges on TikTok.

In January, a 12-year-old girl died in Argentina after reportedly taking part in the same online scarf game.

Milagros Soto was found dead in her bedroom after filming the whole incident.

Last week, an 11-year-old girl died after taking part in a similar online game known as the ‘Clonazepam Challenge’.

The victim collapsed in class after consuming two pills on 29 May.

The schoolgirl was diagnosed as brain-dead in the hospital but passed away from a brain haemorrhage two days after being admitted.

In recent months, another variation of the ‘Whoever Falls Asleep Last Wins’ has become increasingly popular in countries such as Peru, Chile, Ecuador and Mexico.

Chinese-owned TikTok now appears to have suppressed content partaking in the dangerous challenge, which no longer appears when searching the app.

A message which pops up when trying to search for the scarf challenge reads: ‘Some online challenges can be dangerous, disturbing, or even fabricated.

‘Learn how to recognize harmful challenges so you can protect your health and well-being.

It’s understood the term ‘scarf game’ was removed from the platform in 2021, prior to Christy’s death last month.
