A British holidaymaker has died after plummeting from the balcony of a hotel in Ibiza.

John McKenna, from Carlisle, Cumbria, was killed after the fall at the three-star hotel in the party resort of San Antonio yesterday morning.

The 22-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene despite desperate attempts by paramedics to save him.

Emergency services were called to the budget Hotel Llevant, which belongs to the Azuline Hotel Group, at around 11am.

He is understood to have fallen from a third floor balcony of a room where he was reportedly staying with a friend.

The friend he was with is understood to have been quizzed by police, but there is no suggestion the tourist’s death is in any way suspicious.

An investigation being led by the Civil Guard, and coordinated by a local investigating judge, is ongoing.

Tributes have poured in for Mr McKenna following his sudden death, including from his friend and former Carlisle United player Josh Dixon.

He said in a social media post: ‘Absolutely heartbroken writing this. One of my closest mates all the way through school.

‘Wherever you went you would put a smile on someone’s face. Will be a huge miss to us all. Rest easy big man.’

Electrician John is understood to have played for Carlisle City Sunday League Premier side Scotby FC.

There has not yet been any update on the circumstances leading up to his death.

A Civil Guard spokesman, speaking yesterday afternoon, said: ‘A 22-year-old British man has died this morning after plunging from the third floor of a hotel in San Antonio.

‘The incident is still being investigated.’

The hotel where the incident occurred is a budget one-star hotel near San Antonio’s bus station called the azuline Hotel Llevant.

It is described on travel websites as the ‘perfect place to enjoy the party resort’s nightlife’.

It is just 200 metres from San Antonio beach.
