A British man has died after falling from a Lanzarote bar terrace and down some stairs during a scuffle with a drunken ‘troublemaker.’
The 50-year-old bar owner is said to have plunged around 13 feet down a flight of steps in a fight with a German expat who has been arrested on suspicion of homicide.
He was rushed to hospital after being stabilised at the scene but died as a result of his injuries.
According to sources close to the investigation, two Local Police patrols were the first to arrive at the scene and tried to treat the Brit until medical personnel arrived.
The incident happened in the early hours of Sunday morning near the Clock Bar in the resort of Costa Teguise. Mirror reports.
The British national, who has not been officially identified, was pronounced dead at the Doctor Jose Molina Orosa Hospital in Lanzarote’s capital, Arrecife on Monday.
The suspect, a 46-year-old who has not yet been named by local police, went before a judge on Monday and was remanded in custody pending an ongoing investigation.
Local reports said the German had been banned from several bars in the area because he was known as a troublemaker who often got into brawls when he drank too much.
The Guardia Civil then took over the case and studied the testimonies and videos of witnesses, which led to them arresting the 46-year-old German, who is also a resident on the island, before taking him to court where he faces charges for murder.
Court officials have confirmed he is being investigated on suspicion of homicide, although investigators are still understood to be in the process of analysing CCTV footage to see if he deliberately pushed the British man and should be charged with murder or manslaughter.
A spokesman for the investigating judge said: ‘With regards to the death that occurred in the early hours of Sunday morning in Costa Teguise in Lanzarote, Court of Instruction Number Four in Arrecife has confirmed it is investigating a man on suspicion of homicide.
‘This person has exercised his constitutional right not to say anything and has been remanded in prison.’
Almost 200 friends and family members took to social media to share tributes and memories of the man on the Clock Bar’s Facebook page.
One wrote: ‘A huge hole has been left in our hearts and minds. A true gentleman. A lovely man. A great character. A smile that would light up any room.
‘The world has lost someone very special. He will be missed by so many.’
