A 33-year-old man has been arrested as a suspect after a woman was ambushed at random and stabbed to death on a South London street in broad daylight.
Emergency services were called to Stockwell Park Walk in Lambeth, near the O2 Brixton Academy, just after 4pm on Bank Holiday Monday.
Paramedics tried to save the 31-year-old, who has not yet been named, but she died at the scene.
Neighbours said the 31-year-old was on the phone to her grandmother who heard a ‘terrible scream’ during the brutal daylight attack near Brixton’s O2 Academy on Bank Holiday Monday.
Initial inquiries from detectives at the Metropolitan Police suggest a man approached the woman from behind before attacking her.
Officers said there is no information to suggest the killer and the victim were known to each other.
Police said it is believed the woman was walking along the street when she was approached from behind by a man who attacked her.
The 33-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of murder and remains in police custody.
The Met said its Specialist Crime Command is leading the investigation, and has carried out interviews with witnesses as well as a review of CCTV from the area.
At the scene yesterday, a relative of the woman said ‘it’s still so raw’, while several people were seen praying at the scene of her death.
Detective Chief Superintendent Seb Adjei-Addoh, local policing commander for Lambeth, said: ‘This is a shocking attack and my thoughts are with the woman’s family and friends as they come to terms with this awful news.
‘We will do everything we can to support them at this incredibly difficult time.
‘I recognise the considerable concern this incident has caused and I’d like to reassure you that a dedicated team of detectives are carrying out a number of enquiries and have made an arrest.’
