On Wednesday, the news broke that Meghan Markle would remain in California whilst her husband, Prince Harry, will attend the King’s coronation in London – but why was that decision made?
Royal editor, Emily Nash, said: “I think there are a few things going on, one of them being that they may not have wanted to bring the children on such a long journey. There will be a huge amount of scrutiny on them if they do come, so perhaps that is something that Harry wanted to keep his family away from.
Another factor could be that it is also Prince Archie’s fourth birthday on coronation day. Talking about how Harry might be feeling missing his son’s milestone. Emily added: “I’m sure Harry will be sad to not be there on Archie’s day itself, but it’s really important that he’s there to support his father, the King, on this historic occasion.
“It’s a big moment both for the country and for the King personally. I’m sure he’s delighted that Harry’s going to be there.”
Despite his expected attendance, Harry’s role in the ceremony is yet to be confirmed, though it is thought to be unlikely that he will be part of the service.
Traditionally, blood princes do take part in coronation proceedings which would include paying homage to the monarch by placing their hands between the King’s and swearing allegiance, touching the crown and kissing the King’s left cheek.
Emily explained: “I’d be surprised if he had a specific role, I think he will attend the ceremony like other members of the royal family without necessarily taking part.
“But I think that just his presence is a big moment after all the difficulties his family has been through particularly since the publication of Spare. It says a lot that he’s coming and that he’s prepared to be there on the day. “
Other traditions royal family members are expected to take part in during the historic day include the royal procession and an appearance on the balcony of Buckingham Palace.
