American broadcaster Cooper Lawrence has revealed why divorce isn’t on the cards for Donald Trump and his wife Melania.
Donald Trump cut a very lonely figure during as the former First Lady, 52, was conspicuously absent from her husband’s side as he was arraigned in New York on Tuesday to face charges relating to ‘hush money’ paid to porn star Stormy Daniels following an alleged affair.
She was also nowhere to be seen when the president delivered a defiant speech at Mar-a-Lago later that evening, condemning the New York prosecutor and judge who presided over his arraignment.
It’s been reported that Melania is still ‘angry’ at her husband, whose alleged extramarital affair happened just four months after she gave birth to their son, Barron, in 2006.
And while some commentators claim Melania’s no-show proves her marriage is over, Ms Lawrence believes the ex-model knows better than to leave such a lucrative arrangement.
‘I think [Melania] is sick of being embarrassed by [Donald]… but we have seen women stand by their men many, many times because the attitude it is, ‘Listen, you messed up. Why should I be poor?’ Ms Lawrence told Australian breakfast TV show Sunrise on Wednesday.
Ms Lawrence said rumours have been circulating around New York for years that Melania and Trump’s marriage is just a ‘business relationship’.
‘I don’t know for sure. I’ve never met her, but they’re saying that, you know, it’s a symbiotic relationship,’ Ms Lawrence speculated.
‘He gets the hot model on his arm. She gets to be wealthy and she gets to be an American citizen and then she got to be first lady… [and] part of their business is her standing by him,’ she added.
Slovenia-born Melania began dating then-real estate mogul Trump in 1998 while he was still in the process of divorcing his second wife Marla Maples.
Last week, a source told DailyMail that Melania will stick by Donald as he fights the new criminal charges.
‘Mrs Trump is strong. She is focused on her family and stands behind her husband, as she always has,’ said the source.
‘For the past 7 years, the left has made multiple attempts to smear and attack her family and this is just the latest attempt to bring him down.’
The statement of support was a change in tactic for Melania Trump, who was furious when reports of Trump’s extramarital fling with Daniels surfaced. He has denied the affair and any wrong doings.
