The Prince of Wales had his wife Kate and restaurant staff in hysterics as he took a phone booking from an unsuspecting customer.
Prince William, 40, showcased his sense of humour as he and the Princess visited the family-run Indian Streatery in Birmingham city centre on Thursday.
The Prince and Princess also helped out in the kitchen where they tried their hand at making a roti – a simple flatbread often served with cooked vegetables and curries.
Dhiraj Sharma, who helps to run the restaurant which was founded by his parents, Meena and Rakesh, said: “When the customers came in, they were absolutely shocked when we told them that Prince William had taken the booking, they had to sit down. They were travelling from London.”
Vinay Aggarwal and his wife Ankita Gulati, who made the reservation, honoured their 2.15pm booking, and said they “didn’t recognize” William’s voice at all.
Dhiraj said that they were really surprised when William picked up the phone while the couple were served some of the restaurant’s dishes.
Indian Streatery started life as a street food stall in Digbeth and was a firm favourite at the city’s Digbeth Dining Club, as well as various food festivals. The restaurant also has a second site at Birmingham’s Bullring as well as its Bennetts Hill location, which opened six years ago.
Dhiraj said: “We have an all-female team in the kitchen and the Prince and Princess were really interested to hear about our story.”
William and Kate visited Birmingham “to celebrate the city’s diverse culture and heritage and meet future leaders in the creative industries”.
