Two of Neighbours’ most famous former cast members allegedly regretted their decision to return to the soap’s final episode after the show was quickly revived by Amazon Freevee.
Neighbours began airing in 1985 and became a springboard for many Australian actors and performers to embark on bigger careers overseas.
Superstar Kylie Minogue initially found fame in Australia and the United Kingdom after joining the cast in 1986 and left the program in 1988 when her international recording career took off.
In 2022, the show ended its long run on Channel 10 and sister network 10 Peach after years of declining ratings.
The show attracted larger audiences in the United Kingdom than in Australia and a failure to renegotiate a production contract with the show’s UK broadcaster ultimately led to the cancellation.
“Kylie has apparently got a bit of the hump about it all. It’s a case of why she and others make the effort to go back. She and the others were told it was the end,” a source told Britain’s the Mail on Sunday.
“She knows what she owes to Neighbours and she would have always done it, but it does all seem a little baffling,” the source added.
Guy Pearce, another Hollywood star who got his start on the soap, admitted the finale was now a “waste of time”.
“I’ve just inadvertently committed myself to another four years, I’ll just call my American agent and tell him to forget about all that other work,” he allegedly joked during the AACTA awards in December.
