A video of victims of the Train/Bus accident being treated on the floor outside the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital LASUTH has made the rounds on social media.
In the early hours of today March 9, a train and a staff bus belonging to the Lagos state government rammed into each other at the PWD, Ikeja area of Lagos.
A number of injured persons are recorded in the collision and was rushed to the hospital for medical care.
Immediately, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency LASEMA says the casualties are transferred to the General Hospital for further medical attention after being given first aid by the Agency’s Paramedics.
Two female adults that have not been identified already lost their lives to the incident and were handed over to SEHMU for onward transfer to the morgue.
Videos shared online show the staff of the hospital laying foam in an open space and having some of the victims laying on the foam.
It is alleged that this happened because the hospital lacked bed spaces in their facilities to immediately accommodate the victims.
However, the Managing Director of Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC), Mr Fidet Okhiria, when contracted, explained what led to the accident which occurred today, March 9, on the rail track in the Sogunle area of Lagos.
Okhiria who spoke to journalists said the staff bus driver refused to stop for the moving train.
He said; ‘According to the information I gathered at the scene of the incident, they said many cars stopped when they got to the level crossing while the Lagos State Staff Bus driver continued moving, which I don’t know why.
‘Maybe the driver thought he could pass before the train got nearer to him. He could not pass, and then the train crushed the bus; that is what we gathered.
‘The train was coming from Ijoko to Iddo.’
The NRC MD further appealed to motorists not to ignore the point where they should stop.The National Emergency Management Agency has already said that two persons died at the scene while several others were injured.
