The White House has rejected China’s peace proposal for an end to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine as he called it ‘irrational’ in a new interview.
On Friday, February 24 – one-year anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, China called for a cease-fire in the Ukraine-Russia war on Friday and outlined a 12-point plan to negotiate peace.
The plan includes ending hostilities, resuming peace talks and addressing the humanitarian crisis the war created.
However, China’s 12-point proposal does not call for Russia troops to leave Ukraine and appears to criticize Western sanctions against Russia.
ABC News’ David Muir asked Biden in an interview released Friday what he thought of Chinese peace proposal that Russian President Vladimir Putin applauded last week.
‘I think you answered the question, Putin’s applauding it, so how could it be any good? I’m not being facetious. I’m being deadly earnest,’ Biden told Muir.
‘I’ve seen nothing in the plan that would indicate that there is something that would be beneficial to anyone other than Russia if the Chinese plan were followed.’
‘It’s the idea that China is going to be negotiating the outcome of a war that’s a totally unjust war for Ukraine is just not rational,’ he continued.
Tensions between Washington and Beijing have increased since the U.S. shot down a suspected Chinese spying balloon earlier this month.
National security adviser Jake Sullivan accused China of ‘one-sided diplomacy.’
‘China put forward this plan without having had a single conversation since the war began between President Xi and President Zelenskyy,’ he said Sunday on NBC’s “Meet the Press.”
This comes after the State Department and Pentagon warned China against sending military aid to Russia.
