Mindy Kaling’s New Velma Series Slammed As Massive Disaster

Many have condemned Mindy Kaling‘s new ‘VELMA’ series for being over-sexualized. Fanatics of the mystery inc band are not taking it well, with the recent content in the Scooby-Doo franchise.

The first “Scooby Doo” franchise was launched in 1969, and since then, there have been several spinoffs that continue to treat fans with exciting stories of teamwork and mystery-solving.

Its most recent installation, “Velma,” was released on HBO Max on January 12. But unlike the former, this Mindy Kaling’s new series starring the actress bears adult themes.

Joining Kaling, who played the geeky Velma Dinkley, is Constance Wu as Daphne, Sam Richardson as Shaggy, and Glenn Howerton, as Fred. Kaling informed fans at NYCC, that they intend to “honor other interpretations and what we think feels really modern.” But how well have devotees of the iconic piece connected to Mindy Kaling’s new series?

Before Mindy Kaling’s new series touchdown, the production had assured fans that it would be an original and humorous rendition, but many are unimpressed.

The theme follows Velma’s life. She is the brains behind the solved mystery, but barely receives accolades. It highlights her eventful and complicated past.

Rotten Tomatoes scored it 11%, while viewers are refusing to accept the new series. In an attempt to seem woke and flow with the modern day, the showrunners altered the characters.

Now, they are nearly unrecognizable, and on top of that, the well-known teamwork makes the dream work spirit missing. One person tweeted:

“The sad thing is an adult scooby doo adaptation could really work if they actually stayed true to the characters and the mystery gangs’ dynamic instead of being edgy for the sake of being edgy.” A second user tweeted:

“My only real thought on ‘VELMA,’ just from the trailers, is that it does not seem to come from a place of loving (or even at all enjoying) the source material. It’s a strangely mean-spirited twist with *seemingly* no effort made to understand its own basis or fandom.”

Many have slammed the character change as being untrue to what they are used to. The trailer showed Velma as a girl who loves to speak her truth as it is.

The trailer of Mindy Kaling’s new series shows that the production maintained their unique personalities, Velma, a geek, Daphne, a popular chick, Fred, a vain teenager, and Shaggy a school nerd.

However, they all have different sides – Velma is not ready to be trampled upon, Daphne deals with an addiction to shield family secrets, Fred personifies the entitled white male, and Shaggy is worried about being an alpha male.
