She told her family she would rather stay in the caravan.
Unfortunately, she was nowhere to be found when they returned ninety minutes later. It was an unusual scene and didn’t know the tragedy that has strucked until they saw an air ambulance and realized it was Safia.
It was later revealed that Safia has been sending a WhatsApp message to a friend to about being ‘excited to jump off a cliff’. The father revealed, though Safia’s mobile phone was never found.
The day Safia died was supposed to be the last day of their family holiday – the Lardner family took a four-day break and went on holiday to a static caravan park in Sandy Bay, Exmouth, in April 2021.
Her parents Robert and Marcia who called Safia a ‘bubbly’ child believed that she was badly affected by the lockdown.
‘She couldn’t see his friends and was lonely. We’ve been waiting for a new normal and we’re stuck in that moment, we’ll never get over it.
’Safia’s family said they feel isolated and lonely as a result of the lockdown and not seeing friends and studying school work from home.
Her school acknowledged her to be a ‘kind and thoughtful’ girl with a talent for kindness to others.
The devastated father lamented:
‘We couldn’t have any of her friends at the funeral because of lockdown when the limit was 30 people. Now everything is back to how it was except that for us, we are stuck in that time and will never move on. We will never get over it.’
