When Meghan Markle and Prince Harry sat down to tell the world about their romance in their engagement interview, they couldn’t keep the smiles off their faces when recalling meeting on a blind date.
Now, five years later, the couple has told the story again as part of their new Netflix docuseries – Harry & Meghan – but viewers have spotted a few inconsistencies in the two accounts.
As is traditional for royal couples, Meghan and Harry sat down with the BBC for their first chat after announcing their engagement. During the chat, Harry said: “It was definitely a set-up — it was a blind date. It was a blind date for sure.”
As it turns out Harry took a slightly more proactive role in meeting his future wife.
In the show, he reveals he spotted her on a mutual friend’s Instagram page and requested that they be introduced. The funny snap showed Meghan with the popular Snapchat dog ears filter.
He said: “I was scrolling through my feed and someone who was a friend had this video of the two of them, it was like a Snapchat. That was the first thing. I was like ‘Who is THAT?’”
Meghan said the friend then sent her an email, the words of which are typed out on the screen, saying: “Between you and I thought you might want to know this being newly single and all. I put our Snapchat on Instagram and Prince Haz follows me (he’s a friend) he called me last night dying to meet you. hehehe. I might just have to set you up” (sic).
Meghan’s hilarious reply, which was also typed out on screen, was: “Who is prince haz?????”
Below her reply, viewers can see the words: “Sent from my iPhone. Please excuse all technological mishaps. I’m a Luddite.”
The couple then exchanged flirty messages and did video calls before finally arranging to meet up in real life.
Meghan said that she “was really intent on being single, and just having fun girl time, adding: ‘I had a career, I had my life, I had my path, and then along came H. Talk about a plot twist.”
But the new details left many royal fans scratching their heads.
On Twitter, one person wrote: “I’m confused af. I thought Harry and Meghan met on a blind date? Now they met and started chatting after he saw a picture on Instagram? Which is it?”
Another wrote: “Was it on a blind date like they’ve said in older interviews? Or on Instagram like they now say in the doc? I’m surprised that nobody on their team edited that part before it was released.”
“They said it was a blind date at first and now it’s via Instagram?” asked a third.
Meghan and Harry first opened up about the romantic proposal during their engagement interview, which they sat for just hours after telling the world their happy news.
