Netflix released the first trailer for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s highly anticipated documentary series Harry & Meghan Thursday, teasing a glimpse at “what’s happening behind closed doors” for the couple whose projects have reportedly been a source of tension for the royal family.
The six-episode series, directed by Emmy winner Liz Garbus, will examine the couple’s trajectory from the early days of their courtship to the obstacles they say pushed them to “feeling forced” to step back as senior working members of the royal family, according to Netflix.
“No one sees what’s happening behind closed doors,” Harry said in the trailer, as a photo of the couple sitting with his family (brother and sister-in-law, Prince William and Kate Middleton, and his father and stepmother, King Charles III and Queen Camilla) appears on the screen.
For members of the British royal family to take part in such a personal project that hints at discussing relatives is unprecedented, and the project has been unpopular with some members of the British public who accuse the couple of profiting from their royal status.
The Sussexes’ other projects–like Markle’s Spotify podcast and Harry’s upcoming memoir–have also sparked tension within the family, according to British media reports and royal experts.
Markle has particularly been targeted, including being the subject of bizarre conspiracies such as claims she wore a microphone for their Netflix documentary while greeting mourners at Windsor Castle just after Queen Elizabeth II’s death earlier this year.
Netflix did not specify a release date for the series, saying only that the series was coming soon (the project was reportedly delayed after the new season of Neftlix’s The Crown received backlash following Queen Elizabeth II’s death).
The documentary series will be uncharacteristically intimate, according to what Netflix has hinted about the series. The trailer shows a series of never-before-seen photographs of the Sussexes, including selfies—rarely seen from members of the royal family—photos of the couple at what appears to be their private wedding reception and shots from a photobooth. The project also will include commentary from the couple’s friends and family, many of who have never spoken publicly, Netflix said.
