In announcing his third presidential bid, the former president has provided another glimpse into his relationship with his wife near the end of his more than hourlong speech launching his 2024 presidential campaign.
Donald said it ‘hasn’t been a joyride for our great first lady’ and asked Melania to stand up during his announcement speech at Mar-a-Lago on Tuesday night. ‘I go home and she says – they do love her – and she says, “You look angry and upset,” and I tell her, “Just leave me alone, I got this,” said Donald.
‘Hasn’t been easy, but she’s been a great first lady and people love her.’
Melania has remained a mysterious figure within the Trump family. Some observers interpreted her behavior while first lady as reflecting displeasure with the role.
She batted away Donald’s hand on various occasions and wore a jacket with ‘I really don’t care, do u?’ written on the back in a visit to a migrant detention center.
But in her first sit-down interview since the end of Donald’s term, Melania said she ‘enjoyed’ taking care of the White House.
‘Maybe it’ll be your home again?’ Fox News’ Pete Hegseth asked her in May, which Melania replied her with ‘Never say never.’
Melania on Tuesday night appeared enthusiastic at her husband’s announcement event. She sat next to their son Barron Trump, and the two of them followed Donald as he greeted guests at Mar-a-Lago on his way out.
