The year 2020 will forever be haunting for people all over the world. For Nigerians, it will also be a sad year to remember. 2020 is known as the year the whole world took a break as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, but it is also a year of sorrow for Nigerian citizens. The youths of Nigeria took the streets protesting bad governance and general ill treatment of the police and SARS operatives on the youths.
The 20th of October 2020 will forever be a black day for Nigerian citizens as it was the day unarmed protesters at Lekki Toll gate were gunned down by supposed military with several people dying and several others seriously injured. Sadly, the legitimacy of this incident is still in dispute as the government has denied that such ever happened.
Despite the denial of the government, youths still take to the street on the 20th of October every year following the 2020 incident to remember the fallen heroes. This year, the usual memorable peaceful protest of youths have taken a dark turn as protesters have reported being chased and pursued by policemen.
Several youths have reportedly gone online to document the assault on live video as cans of tear gas are thrown at the harmless protesters. For the memorial protest, youths decided to take it back to the place where it all began, Lekki Toll gate, and everything went downhill as they were met with policemen who harassed and arrested peaceful protesters.
The act of the police was meant to disperse the crowd of protesters and get them to leave as they marched to remember dead and missing comrades and to demand an end to police brutality in Nigeria.
