According to Page Six, royal sources say Harry and Meghan were initially invited to the event, which is scheduled for Sunday evening, the night before the Queen’s funeral.
“Harry and Meghan actually got the invitation and no one has actually told them they are uninvited,” one royal source told the outlet.
This tracks with reports from earlier this week suggesting Harry and Meghan had originally been invited to the event but that the invitation was retracted because the reception is going to be limited to “working members of the royal family only.”
The Telegraph reported that it wasn’t even clear “why they had received an invitation for an occasion that royal aides insisted they were not expected to attend” and that Sussex sources were frankly “baffled” by the entire awkward situation while palace aides were still insisting “that they were not invited and were not expected to show up.”
According to the new Page Six report, however, not only were Harry and Meghan definitely given the impression that they were welcome to attend the reception, but they apparently learned that they were actually not on the guest list from the media instead of, you know, being told personally about the alleged mix-up.
“I’m told they only found out they were uninvited by reading press reports,” a second source, described as a “palace insider,” explained to Page Six.
