The unfortunate incident
occurred after a newly installed power cable fell on a container being used as
a shop.
An eyewitness revealed that
the children who were visiting their aunt for the Easter celebration got
electrocuted while playing in the shop.
One of the survivors
identified as Blessing said it was when electricity was restored in the area
that the cable fell on the container shop.
She said: “As we ran out of
the container, the wire trapped our legs and we could not walk again. So, I sat
on the plank that was close to me, but the remaining children started shaking
and vomiting blood. I shouted for help and people came to rescue us and we were
rushed to the General hospital, Ile-Oluji.”
The owner of the shop, Mrs.
Ronke Adebiyi, stated that she was not present when the incident happened but
rushed back when she received a call that her shop was on fire.
Sharing more details of the
incident, she said that five of the children were rushed to the hospital but
four of them died because there was insufficient oxygen.
The Senator representing Ondo
South, Nicholas Tofowomo, advised against erecting structures under high
tension cables or power supply lines. He promised to get justice if the BEDC
were found culpable in the tragedy.
