Everyone indeed
has his/her own opinion regarding what happened. For me:
Idea 1: Just letting it go – the Oscars and American awards ceremonies, in general, have a reputation for brutal jokes at the expense of attendees, it’s
practically encouraged as it’s one of the few things that have made the Oscars
worth watching in recent years and, let’s be real, the likes of Ricky Gervais
would have been far more brutal.
Smith is a seasoned professional, he should
have expected some pretty close-to-the-bone jokes, and it’s not even clear that
Rock knew Jada had alopecia, conceivably he might have thought her baldness was
a style choice and hit a nerve he didn’t realize was so raw. Rocks’ words and demeanor
after making the comment as well as Will appearing to laugh at first at the
comment gave no indication that there was genuine malice behind the joke. He
was clearly shocked when Will attacked him.
Idea 2: Going after
him after the show. If Smith genuinely couldn’t let Rock’s comments pass
without a violent response, he could have at least held off until after the
show and settled it backstage outside of the glare of the cameras, this would
have been better for all parties except the Academy, who must be practically
salivating at the attention this incident has brought the awards.
Idea 3: Handled it
with more class. What Will could and arguably should have done
is walk on stage, take Rocks mic, tell him he was out of order and tell his
wife she looks beautiful, drops the mic and walk back to his seat. If he had
done that I guarantee he would be getting zero negative press right now.
