To this day Ariana Grande’s most scandalous
moment was at the DONUT shop.
On July 7, 2015, she and her then-boyfriend
Ricky Alvarez went to Wolfee Donuts in Lake Elsinore, CA, and not noticing the
shop had a camera inside, Ariana who was making out with Ricky, was dared to
lick multiple powdered donuts, which she did when the people working there
weren’t looking.
Those donuts were later sold to customers who
obviously didn’t know about the contamination, but what was most shocking, and
what really upset the public was what she said after licking the donuts.
She said: “What the fuck is this? I hate
Americans. I hate America. That is disgusting.”
As soon as the video was released the
backlash was instantaneous, and the media, the general public and her fans were
showing how disgusted they were by her behaviour and the next day she released
a statement on her social media:
She later released an apology video in which
she said: “I am EXTREMELY proud to be an American and I’ve always made it clear
that I love my country. What I said in a private moment with my friend, who was
buying the donuts, was taken out of context and I am sorry for not using more
discretion with my choice of words. As an advocate for healthy eating, food is
very important to me and I sometimes get upset by how freely we as Americans
eat and consume things without giving any thought to the consequences that it
has on our health and society as a whole.
“The fact that the United States has
one of the highest child obesity rates in the world frustrates me. We need to
do more to educate ourselves and our children about the dangers of overeating
and the poison that we put into our bodies. We need to demand more from our
food industry. However, I should have known better in how I expressed myself;
and with my new responsibility to others as a public figure, I will strive to
be better.
“Seeing a video of yourself behaving poorly,
that you have no idea was taken, is such a rude awakening, that you don’t know
what to do — I was so disgusted with myself. Not here to make any excuses or
justify my behavior, because I can’t. … I’m just here to apologize.”
This video made her fans make the
#WeForgiveYouAriana trend on Twitter and the heat started dying down and it has
since then been mostly forgotten.
