A mother has been charged with the murder of her eight-week-old son who was stabbed to death in North Belfast.

Liam O’Keefe died in Brompton Park in the Ardoyne area on Tuesday. His sister, who was injured in the same incident, remains in hospital.

Their mother, Ralucan Tagani, 29, was charged with Liam’s murder as well as an additional count of attempted murder relating to the other child.

On Thursday, PSNI’s Detective Chief Inspector Chirs Miller said in a tweet: ‘ The other young child injured during this incident remains in hospital where her condition is described as stable.

‘I would like to thank the local community for their unwavering support and patience while we continue our investigation into the tragic events of Tuesday evening and I continue to ask anyone who has any information to contact us.’

Residents have left toys, flowers and written tributes outside the property over the last number of days.

One relative paid tribute, writing: ‘Let’s light Facebook up for our beautiful angel who lost his life and for our beautiful cousin who is fighting for her life in ICU.’

The father of baby Liam attended a vigil on Thursday and thanked the community for their support.

He said, according to Belfast Live: ‘To all the neighbours and the full community for all their help and support, I really appreciate it all.

‘Holding this vigil means the world to me. I am truly heartbroken but it gives me the strength to know you are all giving so much love and support. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.’
