Following Meghan Markle’s suit against Associated Newspapers Ltd (ANL), in relation to The Mail On Sunday and MailOnline platforms after they published five articles in February of 2019 which contained letters the former Duchess of Sussex had exchanged with her estranged father, Thomas Markle.
In a remote hearing on Tuesday, the High Court ruled in favor of Meghan’s claim that the publications by the news agency breeched reasonable expectations of privacy. The Duchess and her legal team have now gone on to seek a total sum of £1.5m in damages, cost, and have asked that in addition to publishing a front page apology, ANL and its sister publication platforms must destroy all text, notes or copies that can be linked to the personal letters.
The entire duration of the trial has been closed off to the general public because the High Court granted a summary judgement in February that would further protect the privacy of the former Duchess of Sussex while the case was heard; and therefore eliminating the need for a full or conventional trial.

“final injunction restraining misuse of private information”
In response to the outcomes of the proceedings in February, the Duchess’ legal team had asked that ANL pay the sum of £750,000 within a timeframe of two weeks, which would serve as part payment to cover the costs incurred by bringing the claim to court.

However, the court has granted only £450,000 as a part of the £1.5m claim.
The judge also commented that
“The Court of Appeal, of course, may take a different view and the defendant has a right to renew this application to a Court of Appeal judge”.
In a press statement, Meghan expressed her heartfelt gratitude to Prince Harry and her mother for their unwavering support and said that she was
“grateful to the courts for holding Associated Newspapers and The Mail on Sunday to account for their illegal and dehumanizing practices”.
All this is in wake of the anticipated tell all interview with Oprah and the former royals, scheduled to air on 7th March on the CBS network.
