Rufus Norris, Artist director for the National Theatre responds to reports of a rift with its patron, Meghan Markle. The theatre has become known in recent times for its community theatre programmes as much as for hosting performances from Ralph Fiennes and Cate Blanchett.
It was reported that bosses of the National Theatre were displeased when the Duchess of Sussex and her husband Prince Harry announced they were resigning from their royal duties and relocating to Canada with their son, Archie.
But Rufus Norris told The Daily Telegraph:He told the Daily Telegraph:
“She is still very engaged, the conversations are regular and ongoing, there are ideas we are exploring. There has been no indication at all from her that her engagement with us would be anything other than business as usual – she has proven to be a very engaged patron, and we look forward to working with her. From our perspective, I don’t think it’s going to change anything.”
Meghan became patron of the National Theatre in January 2019 after her marriage to Prince Harry in May 2018.
The couple will be expected to be in the UK next month on the request of The Queen to join her and the rest of the family for the Commonwealth service at Westminster Abbey, which will take place on 9 March. The traditional Commonwealth service will also see other senior members of the royal family in attendance, including Prince William and Kate, and Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall.
