Harry and Meghan ‘in discussion’ with the Queen about whether they can use Sussex Royal brand

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have made efforts to brand their Sussex Royal name in view of launching a new brand of clothing and household items.

The Foundation Of The Duke And Duchess Of Sussex applied for the protection of the term SUSSEX ROYAL through a UK trademark application in June 2019. Since the application was filed, it has subsequently been examined at the UK Intellectual Property Office (UKIPO) and is currently in the opposition period. That period was due to end on 20 February 2020. However, on Tuesday (21 January), a notice of threatened opposition was filed to the UKIPO, which automatically extends the opposition period by one month.

Although the couple currently use the title for their website, social media accounts or their charitable foundation, discussions are still ongoing in Buckingham Palace in the use of their HRH titles in the future.

According to HELLO:

“As The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are stepping back as senior members of the Royal Family and will work towards financial independence, use of the word ‘Royal’, in this context, needed to be reviewed. Discussions are still ongoing. As part of the process to transition The Duke and Duchess of Sussex into their new chapter – planning has been well underway around the launch of their new non-profit organisation. Details will be shared in due course.”

Prince Harry and Meghan after their wedding in May 2018, was under the Duke and Duches of Cambridge as Kensington Palace but in 2019 started using the Sussex Royal branding on social media before their announcement to resign as senior royals in January 2020.

The couple was last seen stepping down from a commercial flight in Canada returning from a series of visits-one to Stanford University where they had seven hours of brainstorming session with academics and professors.

They are expected to attend the Commonwealth

service at Westminster Abbey, which will take place on 9 March on the request of the Queen and other senior members of the royal family in attendance, including Prince William and Kate, and Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall.
