The first Royal to get a divorce was Princess Margaret’s, The Queen’s only sister whose marriage to photographer Antony Armstrong-Jones, Earl of Snowdon in 1960 ended in 1978 after having two children together.
In recent times we have counts of divorce in royal marriages and the latest being The Earl and Countess of Snowdon, Princess Margaret’s son David Armstrong-Jones and wife Serena who got married in 1993 and share two children, Viscount Linley, Charles Armstrong-Jones and Lady Margarita Armstrong-Jones.
“The Earl and Countess of Snowdon have amicably agreed that their marriage has come to an end and that they shall be divorced. They ask that the press respect their privacy and that of their family.” -a spokesman said.
Another very recent one has to be Princess Anne’s son Peter Phillips and wife Autumn Kelly, a Canadian management consultant, who got married in 2008 in St George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle. They have two children together, and even though they separated in 2019, announcements were made this year.
There are many others whose marriages haven’t lasted, they include:
Prince Charles and Princess Diana got married at St Paul’s Cathedral in 1981. The relationship went sour in 1992 and their divorce became finalised in 1996.
Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson tied the knot at Westminster Abbey in 1986, drifted apart and announced their separation in 1992 and finalized their divorce in 1996.
Princess Anne and Captain Mark Phillips married at Westminster Abbey in 1973 and in 1981, they announced their separation, finalising their divorce in 1992. Anne is currently married to Vice Admiral Sir Timothy Laurence.
Lady Davina Windsor and Gary Lewis got married in 2004 at a private chapel at Kensington Palace and in March 2019, it was announced that Lady Davina Windsor and her husband Gary Lewis had split after 14 years.
Prince Joachim of Denmark and Countess Alexandra got married on 18 November 1995, at Frederiksborg Palace Church in Hillerød, near Copenhagen, and were divorced in April 2005.
Princess Caroline of Monaco and Philippe Junot, Parisian banker Philippe got married in Monaco in 1978, and the marriage ended in divorce two years later.
Princess Stéphanie of Monaco and Daniel Ducruet, her bodyguard in 1992 and divorced four years after their wedding.
