On Tuesday, Meghan Markle, Duchess of Sussex was spotted in Vancouver, visiting Downtown Eastside Women’s Centre, where she spent time discussing some of the issues affecting women.
The center was founded in 1978 to provide a safe space for women and children in the Downtown Eastside. They provide practical support, basic necessities and hot nutritious meals to over 500 women and children every day.
Supporting women to make positive changes in their lives by connecting them to a continuum of services including outreach, advocacy, wellness, recreation, housing and skills development.
The community also works towards increasing awareness of systemic injustice and inequalities that contribute to women’s vulnerability by creating awareness of poverty and violence issues to the general public and to the government.
The Duchess who recently announced their decision to step down as senior members of the royal family seems to have an interest in supporting communities of women across the globe.
It’s it still uncertain what her future roles will be as a Royal but she does seem to have a plan to keep supporting charities and collaborate with communities like this.
Following the Sussex announcement the Queen released a statement via Buckingham Palace after hosting a crisis meeting with her family:
“Today my family had very constructive discussions on the future of my grandson and his family. My family and I are entirely supportive of Harry and Meghan’s desire to create a new life as a young family. Although we would have preferred them to remain full-time working Members of the Royal Family, we respect and understand their wish to live a more independent life as a family while remaining a valued part of my family. Harry and Meghan have made clear that they do not want to be reliant on public funds in their new lives. It has therefore been agreed that there will be a period of transition in which the Sussexes will spend time in Canada and the UK. These are complex matters for my family to resolve, and there is some more work to be done, but I have asked for final decisions to be reached in the coming days.”
