It’s uncommon for Royals to take selfies, as they go about their official engagements with the public.
The Queen had shared with US Ambassador Matthew Barzun, that she doesn’t think it’s good for the public to be staring at phone screens, whenever she makes a public appearance as a guest.
Matthew later told Tatler: “She was essentially saying: ‘I miss eye contact’.”
However, Sophie, the Countess of Wessex broke the protocols on her two-day royal visit to Sierra Leone this week as she joined a selfie photograph with staffs at the Aberdeen Women’s Clinic in Freetown on the second day of her visit.
Even though Royals avoid taking selfies with the pubic, the Countess of Wessex could not avoid this one request as she agreed to the staffs request.
Looking back, we remember Prince Harry’s encounter with a young royal fan during a visit to the Australian Memorial in Canberra. Even though Harry took the photo, he still managed to explain that: “No, I hate selfies. Seriously, you need to get out of it (the habit), I know you’re young, selfies are bad. Just take a normal photograph!
Also, in 2014, Prince William agreed to a selfie with a school girl on Christmas Day at Sandringham.
Fact is, Royals pay more attention to the work involved in their official engagements and they politely turn down selfie requests from the public.
