Frozen 2 sets new record as the highest-grossing animated film ever at £1billion

Frozen 2 has become the highest-grossing animated film ever after taking £1billion at the box office.

The Disney film, a sequel to the 2013 original, has proved to be a roaring success since its premiere on November 7 and worldwide release on the 22nd.

It has surpassed the first Frozen, which earned around £970,000 in the same amount of time.

The figures mean Frozen 2 is the third biggest film of 2019 following two more Disney films: Marvel’s Avengers: Endgame (£2.12billion) and The Lion King (£1.26billion)

Disney considers The Lion King a live action remake and so it isn’t counted as the best performing animated film.

The sequel saw Kristen Bell (Princess Anna) and Idina Menzel (Queen Elsa) reprise their roles.

Snowman Olaf and reindeer Sven also return for another adventure.

They head to an enchanted land and face danger to find the origins of Elsa’s power and save their kingdom.

Elsa is based on The Snow Queen who has the ability to create ice and snow and accidentally turns the fictional kingdom of Arendelle into an eternal winter.

The original was a smash hit and won two Oscars for Best Animated Feature and Best Original song for Let It Go.

It took Frozen 2 around three weeks to pass the £1billion mark, beating the 15 weeks it took for the original to get to the same milestone.
