When Royals Break down In Tears In Public from Kate Middleton to the Queen

We love the Royal families for their poise and charisma in private and even in public, we share their joyful moments and love to see them laugh but just like every other human, they have tough moments where they expressive emotions in tears. 

Let’s take you through those moments of strength from both our favourite British and Europeans royals. 

HRH The Queen at the Remembrance Sunday 2019 service wiped a tear, while paying tribute to war heroes. She watched the ceremony from the balcony of the Foreign & Commonwealth Office building, alongside the Duchess of Cornwall and the Duchess of Cambridge.

Prince Harry In October 2019 attended the WellChild Awards and while giving his speech shared an emotional moment. 

Harry said:

“Last year when my wife and I attended we knew we were expecting our first child – no one else did at the time, but we did…”Engulfed with emotion, he  trailed off, bent his head down and cleared his throat before continuing. Gaby Roslin was on hand to comfort the Duke, as he continued: “I remember squeezing Meghan’s hand so tight during the awards, both of us thinking what it would be like to be parents one day, and more so, what it would be like to do everything we could to protect and help our child should they be born with immediate challenges or become unwell over time. And now, as parents, being here and speaking to all of you pulls at my heart strings in a way I could have never understood until I had a child of my own.”

The event was aimed at celebrating  the inspirational qualities of seriously ill children and young people. 


Princess Martha Louise of Norway’s eldest daughter Maud Angelica Behn delivered an emotional eulogy at her father Ari Behn’s funeral in January 2019. The 16-year-old and her younger sisters, Leah Isadora Behn, 14, and Emma Tallulah Behn, 11, placed flowers on the casket. Mr Behn died by suicide, aged 47, on Christmas Day 2019. He married King Harald and Queen Sonja’s eldest daughter Princess Martha Louise in 2002, but they later divorced in 2017. 


Empress Masako, emotionally moved by the special celebration to mark Emperor Naruhito, her husband’s enthronement wipes away tears of joy. 



Queen Matilda sheds a few tear as she watched her daughter Crown Princess Elisabeth deliver a speech in an official ceremony to mark her 18th birthday in Brussels. The beautiful princess will become Belgium’s first Queen by birth. 


3-year-old Princess Charlotte in 2018 had her own moment when during Trooping the Colour ceremony in celebration of the Queen’s birthday, she slipped and fell, hitting her head on the balcony railing. Her mum, Kate Middleton who was standing behind her, scooped her up into her arms and snuggled her close.





The Duchess of Sussex Meghan Markle had a bout during her visit to Tonga. A group of school children sand a funny song to her and Prince Harry about mosquitoes and she couldn’t help but let the tear of joy flow.



I’m November 2014, The Duchess of Cambridge attended a launch event for East Anglia Children’s Hospices charity in November 2014 and while driving away after the event she was seen crying. She had a moment with an attendee, Leigh Smith who lost her three-month-old baby Beatrice from a rare heart condition. Kate replied to her letter and sought Leigh out during the launch event. Physiotherapist Leigh revealed:

“Kate gave me a hug just before she left. I was getting quite teary-eyed, she had tears in her eyes and she just said to me, ‘You’re a very brave lady and again, I’m just so, so sorry.'”

Princess Diana 22 years ago bursted into tears as she left the Ashworth Hospice in Liverpool.

The Duchess of Cornwall,Camilla, had a moment also during a visit to the Safelives Centre in London in January 2016. She spoke to victims of domestic abuse and heard from Diana Parkes, whose daughter Joanna Brown was murdered by husband Robert.


Again, The Queen In 2002 spotted in an emotional feat on Remembrance Sunday as she visits the Field of Remembrance at Westminster Abbey.




For the first time in 1997, during the decommissioning of HMY Britannia The Queen

cried in public. She had to say goodbye to her luxury yacht, whose cost of maintenance was to high. It had dutifully served the family for over 40 years.




Princess Anne also at the decommissioning seen wiping away some tears. 




Crown Princess Mette-Marit of Norway was all emotional at King Harald and Queen Sonja’s 75th birthday celebrations at the Oslo Opera House. The couple had decided to celebrate on the 31st of May despite being born on different dates.


Queen Silvia of Sweden was the mother-of-the-bride in June 2010 as she celebrated her daughter Princess Victoria’s wedding.

Queen Maxima of the Netherlands was emotional at a memorial service in Apeldoorn to pay tribute to those killed or injured in the horrific Queen’s Day attack, which happened there the year before in April 2009.




Again, Queen Maxima of the Netherlands expressed grief as when she attended a heartbreaking service in Eindhoven in July 2014. 

In 2014, Queen Mathilde of Belgium paid her respects to Queen Fabiola’s (who was the queen consort of King Baudouin of Belgium for 33 years) funeral, surrounded by her husband King Phillipe and their four children.


During an annual event in the Monegasque royal calendar, Princess Stephanie of Monaco was moved to tears as she attended the 24th International Circus Festival.


As Norway marked one year after the terrible attack in 2011, Princess Martha Louise of Norway was reduced to tears. Among the dead was Princess Mette-Marit of Norway’s stepbrother.

Princess Beatrice sheds tears as her friend was denied entry to the Royal Box at the Royal Berkshire Polo Club in 1991.


While the family celebrated Prince Henrik’s 75th birthday, Crown Princess Mary of Denmark tried to calm down her little boy Prince Christian during a parade at Fredensborg Palace in 2009.




During the family’s summer photocall in 2013, Crown Princess Mary again comforts her 3 year old daughter Princess Josephine as the activity became too overwhelming for her.



Prince Frederik’s wife Princess Mary comforts their daughter Princess Isabella at the funeral of ASOS founder Anders Holch Povlsen’s three children. Anders and his wife Anne tragically lost their son Alfred and daughters Alma and Agnes in the Easter Sunday bombings in Sri Lanka in 2019. The event was held in Aarhus, Denmark.
