The Duchess of Sussex insisted on a hug instead

The Duchess of Sussex graced the opening ceremony of the annual One Young World Summit at the Royal Albert Hall, London on Tuesday night. This global event brings together few thousands of young leaders from about 200 countries.

As Meghan arrived on stage, she insisted on a hug instead of a curtsy from Kate Robertson, founder of One Young World. The beautiful moment was captured by cameras as Meghan gave the hug.

It is not the first time the Duchess would give a hug. Her friend Bonnie Hammer once mentioned how Meghan would often hug staff at Kensington Palace. She said,

“I heard a story from her very early in their [Prince Harry and Meghan] dating and Meghan would come up to the Palace and she’d get out of the car and she’d have a bag or two. The guards would basically greet her and kind of walk her in. After the first couple of times, I guess she started giving a hug to the guys, which wasn’t exactly protocol and at some point, somebody said to her, ‘people don’t usually do that’ and she said ‘I’m American, I hug.'”

Meghan also gives hugs to members of the public, especially children, as she goes about her engagements. The royal family’s website has this to say:

“There are no obligatory codes of behaviour when meeting The Queen or a member of the Royal Family, but many people wish to observe the traditional forms [a small bow for men, a curtsy for women].”
