Authorities in Cork, Ireland, have arrested a 38-year-old Nigerian man in connection with the death of an 84-year-old Nigerian woman, who passed away in the hospital two days after an alleged assault at her home.
The elderly woman was taken to Cork University Hospital by ambulance on Tuesday after feeling unwell following an incident at her residence in Carrigaline on Sunday, February 23, 2025. Medical examinations revealed she had suffered a severe brain injury, and she was pronounced dead shortly before 4 p.m. on Tuesday.
The incident reportedly began on Sunday evening when the woman’s daughter was assaulted in the kitchen of their home on Garrydhu Drive.
Seeking help, the middle-aged woman went to a neighbor’s house but returned to find her elderly mother in a disoriented state. The elderly woman later stated that she had been pushed and dragged down the stairs, sustaining injuries.
Gardaí responded to the scene and took a 38-year-old man, known to both women, to Cork University Hospital, where he was placed under mental health legislation. After being discharged, he was arrested on Tuesday afternoon and taken to Togher Garda Station for questioning regarding the alleged assault.
Investigators have cordoned off the residence, and forensic examiners are set to search for evidence to aid in the inquiry.
Additionally, Gardaí have requested assistance from the State Pathologist’s Office, with sources indicating that the postmortem examination will be crucial in determining whether the woman’s death was directly linked to the alleged assault.
