The Danish royal palace confirmed that King Frederik was on a private trip last Friday, with his eldest son, Crown Prince Christian, 19, stepping in as regent during his absence.

It has since emerged that the 56-year-old monarch traveled to Switzerland to attend the Biathlon World Championships in Lenzerheide. Biathlon, a winter sport that combines cross-country skiing with rifle shooting, sees athletes navigating snowy courses and stopping at designated shooting ranges to hit targets.

Danish newspaper Dagbladet captured images of King Frederik arriving at the event, marking his latest solo outing before his upcoming engagements with Queen Mary.

This trip follows a private winter holiday taken by the King and Queen with their three youngest children during their school break from February 7 to 16. Crown Prince Christian also acted as regent during that period.

Meanwhile, Queen Mary, 53, recently resumed her royal duties after visiting family in her native Australia. She was seen last Friday at Amalienborg Palace, where she met with Simon Kjær Hansen, the leader of The Queen Mary’s Centre.

The royal couple has a packed schedule ahead. On Monday, they were set to attend a service at Holmes Church to mark the third anniversary of the invasion of Ukraine. On Tuesday, King Frederik will greet newly-appointed first lieutenants from the Army at Christian VII’s Palace at Amalienborg, while Queen Mary will take part in the EliteForsk Prize ceremony.

Later in the week, on Friday, the King and Queen will host a special evening reception at the palace for members of the arts and culture sectors, where they will be joined by Frederik’s mother, Queen Margrethe.
