Atalanta forward Ademola Lookman has fired back at manager Gian Piero Gasperini’s public criticism after his missed penalty in the club’s 3-1 UEFA Champions League defeat to Club Brugge on Tuesday, February 18.

Following the loss, Gasperini harshly labeled Lookman as the “worst penalty taker.” In response, the Nigerian international issued a strongly worded statement on Wednesday, February 19, expressing his disappointment at being singled out.

“Being singled out in this manner is not only hurtful but deeply disrespectful, especially considering the immense hard work and dedication I’ve shown every day to bring success to this club and its incredible fans in Bergamo,” Lookman stated.

He also clarified that he did not go against team instructions when taking the penalty, explaining that the team’s designated penalty taker had asked him to step up.

“During the match, the designated penalty taker instructed me to take the penalty. To support the team, I took responsibility in that moment,” he explained.

Lookman, who played a crucial role in Atalanta’s Europa League victory last May, admitted that he has faced challenging moments at the club but always prioritized the team.

“I have endured many difficult moments here, most of which I’ve kept private because I believe the team must always be protected and come first. This makes last night’s situation even more painful,” he added.
