Pope Francis is currently being treated for a “complex clinical situation” and will remain hospitalized at Rome’s Gemelli hospital for as long as necessary, the Vatican announced.
The 88-year-old pontiff was admitted on Friday for treatment and testing related to bronchitis. An update on Monday confirmed that he has developed a “polymicrobial infection” in his respiratory tract, prompting adjustments to his treatment plan.
Prior to his hospitalization, Pope Francis experienced bronchitis symptoms for several days and had delegated others to read his prepared speeches at scheduled events.
Vatican spokesperson Matteo Bruni reported that the Pope remains in good spirits. “All tests conducted so far indicate a complex clinical situation that requires ongoing hospital care,” the Vatican’s statement read.
The Pope’s weekly general audience, typically held each Wednesday, has been canceled this week. Another update on his condition is expected later on Monday.
Over the weekend, the Vatican stated that the Pope’s condition was stable and that he had been advised to get “complete rest” for recovery.
Due to his health, Pope Francis was unable to deliver his regular Sunday prayer in St. Peter’s Square or lead a special mass for artists commemorating the Catholic Church’s Jubilee Year.
Last Wednesday, he had asked a priest to assist with reading part of his speech, citing his ongoing health struggles. Despite his condition, he continued to hold meetings at his Vatican residence last week in an effort to rest and recover.
The pontiff previously spent three nights at Gemelli hospital in March 2023 for bronchitis treatment. He also canceled a December 2023 trip to the United Arab Emirates for the COP28 climate summit due to another illness.
Throughout his life, Pope Francis has faced several health challenges, including the removal of part of one lung at age 21.
