Prince William and Princess Kate known for their dazzling appearances on the BAFTAs red carpet, will not be attending this year’s ceremony.
While Prince William attended last year’s event solo as President of the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA), he is not expected to be present at the star-studded gathering this Sunday.
Since taking on the formal role in 2010—succeeding actor and director Richard Attenborough—the Prince has not attended consecutive ceremonies.
This year, William’s focus has shifted to supporting the next generation of filmmakers. On Wednesday, he visited the London Screen Academy (LSA) in Highbury, north London, to participate in a project with students.
During his visit, William engaged with senior BAFTA representatives and LSA board members. Tim Bevan, co-founder of the academy, explained that “education and industry should come together” as part of their vision.
The Prince commented on the need for greater awareness of opportunities in the film industry, saying the “film star essence… is so distant from reality” and that many people are unaware they can work in the field.
Actor David Tennant will host the 78th British Academy Film Awards at the Royal Festival Hall in London. Notable nominees this year include Adrien Brody, Ralph Fiennes, Demi Moore, and Cynthia Erivo.
Although William won’t be attending, he will appear in a pre-recorded video segment during the ceremony.
