A teacher has been sentenced to prison after engaging in a s*xual relationship with a 16-year-old student and instructing him to bring a gun to school with the intention of targeting a colleague in the United States.
Kay Ewer, 28, reportedly exploited the trust placed in her by targeting a student with special educational needs, subjecting him to multiple s*xual encounters over several weeks.
The court was informed that Ewer manipulated the teenager for financial gain and convinced him that he was uniquely special to her. Additionally, it was revealed that she inundated him with text messages, urging him to bring a firearm not just for their meetings but also to school, where she aimed to shoot another teacher in the leg.
This troubling behavior was uncovered when another educator at the Lakewood, Colorado school noticed inappropriate writing on the student’s assignment and notified the authorities.
Ewer pleaded guilty to s*xual assault on a minor by someone in a position of trust and contributing to the delinquency of a minor, receiving a four-year prison sentence as part of a plea deal that saw three other felony charges and a misdemeanor dismissed.
During the sentencing hearing, the victim’s mother spoke of the profound impact Ewer’s actions had on her son, stating, “The defendant preyed on my son, convincing him she genuinely cared while exploiting him for money and making him feel like he was ‘the one.’ It hurts even more knowing I trusted her. Had I known the truth, I would never have allowed her such close access.”
Following her release from prison in 2029, Ewer will be placed on the S*x Offender Register for a duration determined by probation, potentially lasting from ten years to life.
Police reported that they observed Ewer’s favoritism towards the victim almost immediately during their investigation, which began in late 2023. Their s*xual relationship commenced in September 2023 and ended in November after concerns were raised by another staff member. Evidence collected included indications of repeated s*xual encounters, continuous digital communications—some of which contained derogatory remarks about the victim—and the introduction of drugs, alcohol, and weapons.
At her sentencing, Ewer, who had been working in education for eight years prior to her arrest, expressed her remorse: “I want to apologize to the victim and his family. I’m truly sorry; this will never happen again.”
