The Enugu State Government has strongly condemned the brutal attack on Mrs. Chinonso Echegi by her husband, Sunday Onyeahanachi Echegi.
According to reports, Echegi severed his wife’s hand following a dispute in Ibagwa Ani, Nsukka Local Government Area. The victim is currently receiving treatment at Enugu State Teaching Hospital, while the suspect has been apprehended.
In a statement delivered by the Commissioner for Children, Gender Affairs, and Social Development, Ngozi Enih, the state condemned the horrific act and pledged to ensure the perpetrator is fully prosecuted.
Enih, who visited the victim in the hospital, expressed her outrage, emphasizing that the incident underscores the urgent need to address gender-based violence (GBV).
“It is deeply distressing to report the tragic case of Mrs. Chinonso Echegi, whose hand was savagely cut off by her husband, Mr. Sunday Onyeahanachi Echegi. She is currently in critical condition, having been transferred from Keoetochukwu Hospital in Nsukka to Enugu State Teaching Hospital for specialized care,” Enih said.
“This barbaric act is not only an assault on one individual but a painful reminder of the pressing need to end gender-based violence in our society. Violence against women and girls, in any form, is intolerable and will not be tolerated in Enugu State.”
The Enugu State Government has taken swift action to ensure that Mr. Sunday Onyeahanachi Echegi faces justice.
“My office is working diligently, in collaboration with relevant agencies, to ensure that Mrs. Chinonso Echegi receives the necessary support and that the full force of the law is applied to the perpetrator,” Enih continued.
“This serves as a stern warning to anyone contemplating violence against women. Enugu State has zero tolerance for gender-based violence, femicide, and all forms of abuse. We are dedicated to protecting the rights, safety, and dignity of every woman in our state.”
Enih further stated that gender-based violence is not merely a private issue but a societal one that affects everyone, urging all to join efforts in raising awareness, supporting survivors, and holding perpetrators accountable.
“I call on all stakeholders, community leaders, and individuals to stand united against GBV. Let us create a society where women and girls live without fear, their voices are heard, and their rights are respected,” she said.
“To those contemplating such acts, understand this: Enugu State will not hesitate to act. Justice will prevail, and you will face the full consequences of your actions.”
