Meghan Markle launched her account on January 1, ushering in the new year with fresh aspirations, but observant royal fans noticed an error in her biography.
The bio lists her as “Meghan, Duchess of Sussex” rather than the correct “Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex.” The distinction is significant: the former is a style used by divorced royals, while the latter reflects her current title.
For example, Sarah Ferguson is known as “Sarah, Duchess of York” following her divorce from Prince Andrew, as she no longer holds the title of “the” Duchess of York. Similarly, after her divorce from Prince Charles, Princess Diana became “Diana, Princess of Wales,” losing the “the” from her title.
However, Meghan retains her title as “the Duchess of Sussex,” as she and Prince Harry did not lose their titles when stepping back as senior royals in 2020. They were only stripped of their HRH (His/Her Royal Highness) status. Harry remains a prince and fifth in line to the throne but relinquished his military titles.
Meghan’s Instagram handle, @meghan, debuted with a personal video captured by Harry. The clip, filmed near their Montecito home, shows Meghan running along a beach in white jeans and a shirt. She joyfully inscribes “2025” into the sand, marking the new year.
The account first appeared in 2022, featuring a previously unseen photo of Meghan. While she did not confirm ownership at the time, fans speculated it was hers, as single-name handles are typically reserved for high-profile figures.
In the lead-up to her official launch, Meghan replaced her profile picture of pink dahlias—a nod to her mother’s nickname for her—with a stunning black-and-white portrait taken by her friend, photographer Jake Rosenberg.
Since launching the account, Meghan has shared a trailer for her upcoming Netflix series, With Love, Meghan, and a heartfelt tribute to her late beagle, Guy, who passed away in early January.
