Chinedu Stanley Asuzu, a Nigerian national and brother of late Nollywood actor Ernest Asuzu, was tragically murdered by armed assailants at his residence in Johannesburg South, South Africa, on December 16, 2024.
The Nigerian Union South Africa (NUSA) confirmed the incident in a statement on Monday, December 22, condemning the killing of the father of four. NUSA’s National Publicity Secretary, Akindele Olunloyo, stated that the organization is working closely with authorities and providing support to the grieving family.
According to NUSA, Chinedu was in the midst of divorce and asset division proceedings with his estranged South African wife, Mrs. Busisiwe Sibanyoni. Efforts by NUSA President-General Hon. Smart Nwobi to contact her have been unsuccessful. A WhatsApp message was sent, but she had not responded at the time of the report.
A witness at the scene provided details to the investigating officer, confirming that a murder investigation has been launched. NUSA’s legal team is gathering information and liaising with the family to ensure justice is served.
Allegations Against Ex-Wife
A Nigerian man, identified as Mr. Ade, has raised concerns over the handling of Chinedu’s body, claiming that Busisiwe has seized the corpse. In videos circulating online, Ade alleges that Chinedu was killed shortly after Busisiwe called to say she was coming to pick up their children, despite it being Chinedu’s scheduled day with them.
According to Ade, after Chinedu handed over the children, armed men stormed his home and shot him. He further claimed that the couple was divorcing due to Busisiwe’s alleged misuse of Chinedu’s finances. Ade stated that all of Chinedu’s assets and funds were in Busisiwe’s name because he lacked a residential permit and was ineligible to open a bank account.
Ade also alleged that a friend of Busisiwe contacted him, claiming she was withholding the body out of fear that Chinedu’s family might perform rituals to haunt those responsible for his death.
Call for Action
Ade has appealed to the Nigerian embassy to intervene and urged Busisiwe to release the body to avoid what he described as “spiritual consequences.”
NUSA reiterated its condemnation of the violence and urged South African authorities to bring the perpetrators to justice. They also reminded the Nigerian community in South Africa to prioritize safety and remain vigilant.
