The Danish royal couple, aged 56 and 52 respectively, have relocated to Marselisborg Castle in Aarhus, situated on the eastern coast of the Jutland peninsula, to host their family for the first time during their reign.
Joining them are their four children: Crown Prince Christian, 19, Princess Isabella, 17, and twins Prince Vincent and Princess Josephine, who will celebrate their 14th birthday in January. The family reunion marks the first time they have been photographed together since Christian’s return from his gap year in East Africa, where he spent three months working on two farms.
Christian, now towering over his father, was also seen warmly greeting his grandmother, Queen Margrethe, 84, at the castle’s entrance. Margrethe, who stepped down from the throne in January after 52 years, appeared delighted to reunite with her grandchildren.
The family posed for a festive photo, with Queen Mary wearing a cosy high-neck knit, Princess Isabella looking stylish in a suede jacket and wide-legged jeans, and Princess Josephine opting for a tailored grey coat. King Frederik and Crown Prince Christian coordinated in dark blazers, while Prince Vincent wore a funnel-neck coat.
The royal couple will remain at Marselisborg Castle until 26 December, while Queen Margrethe will stay until 30 December. However, Prince Joachim, Frederik’s brother, and his wife, Princess Marie, will not attend the festivities at the castle.
Joachim, Marie, and their two children, Count Henrik, 15, and Countess Athena, 12, are spending Christmas with Marie’s family in France. The couple recently relocated to Washington, D.C., where Joachim serves as the defence industry attaché at the Danish Embassy.
Joachim’s elder sons, Count Nikolai, 25, and Count Felix, 22, from his first marriage to Alexandra, Countess of Frederiksborg, are also celebrating separately. Nikolai, who graduated from Copenhagen Business School in June, appears to be spending the holidays in Tasmania, Australia, with his model girlfriend, Benedikte Thoustrup.
