A man in his 40s has died after his car plunged into water with police now launching an appeal on the horrifying incident.

The fatal event took place on the Isle of Wight last night and police are asking anyone who may have information or witnessed it to come forward.

This comes as the Hampshire & Isle of Wight force were called at 11.28pm on Saturday November 30 to a report that a car had entered the water near Shore Road, Gurnard.

The driver of a Ford Mondeo – a man from Ryde – was the only person inside the vehicle and was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

His next of kin was informed by officers.

Officers say they are carrying out enquiries to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the incident and would like to speak to anyone with information.
