The discovery was made around 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 12, by a beach worker who was raking the sand at Key Biscayne. After contacting 911, authorities confirmed that the head was indeed human and cordoned off the area as police began their investigation.
Police have classified the incident as a homicide and are collaborating with the Medical Examiner to identify the victim.
However, it remains unclear whether the discovery is connected to any recent cases, including the disappearance of a teenager who went missing while swimming in the area, according to a police spokesperson.
Local residents expressed shock and fear following the unsettling find. “You see all kinds of things here, but nothing like this—seeing a person’s head,” said Bahman Amini, speaking to CBS News. “It makes us scared to go to the beach that we love.”
Another resident remarked, “This is my typical route. Our neighborhood is very safe. We have our children here; our children play on these beaches, and it’s just beyond belief.”
A woman who was walking on the beach at the time described being swiftly escorted away from the scene by a police officer, saying, “He signaled with his finger that I needed to turn around immediately. I understood the assignment.”
As of now, no other human remains have been found in the area.
