Abia State House of Representatives member, Alexander Ikwechegh, who was captured on video allegedly assaulting Bolt driver Stephen Abuwatseya, is now with FCT Commissioner of Police, Tunji Disu, for questioning regarding the incident.
Ikwechegh arrived at the FCT Police Command at 2:50 p.m. and is still with the FCT police commissioner.
The FCT Police Command acknowledged the incident, which occurred on October 27, 2024, in Maitama, Abuja, in a statement titled, “Nigeria Police Reacts to the Humiliation of Dispatch Rider by Abia State House of Reps Member,” signed by spokesperson SP Josephine Adeh.
The statement notes that preliminary investigations suggest the altercation began during Abuwatseya’s delivery of a package to Hon. Ikwechegh, who allegedly responded to a dispute over delivery with physical assault.
The police also expressed concern over Ikwechegh’s reportedly dismissive response to the incident, allegedly stating, “You can go ahead and call the Inspector General of Police,” showing a troubling disregard for law enforcement authority.
The command urged the public not to misuse the Inspector-General of Police’s name or office to intimidate others, reiterating the IGP’s commitment to impartiality. “Currently, the suspect is at the Maitama Police Station undergoing questioning,” Adeh confirmed.
