Sarah Boone, accused of killing her boyfriend by zipping him into a suitcase, is currently on trial following the death of Jorge Torres, Jr. in February 2020.
More than four years after Torres, aged 42, passed away, Boone took the stand on Tuesday, October 22, and recounted an incident in which she and Torres were playing hide-and-seek.
Boone explained that during the game, she hid in the shower of an upstairs restroom and waited for “quite some time.” Eventually, she decided to end the evening as she was ready for bed. When she went downstairs to look for Torres, she found him “settling himself into a suitcase,” noting that “he was trying to get himself flat so I couldn’t see that he was in there.”
“I zipped him up. We thought it was funny and joked about how he was small enough to fit inside the suitcase,” Boone stated.
She added that they were both amused by the idea of him fitting into the suitcase, and she playfully moved it around a little with him still inside. Boone claimed that Torres had already pulled the top of the suitcase over himself when she zipped it up, and they both found it “funny.”
After moving the suitcase around on its wheels, she described how the atmosphere remained lighthearted, with both of them laughing.
Boone, who also alleged that Torres had been abusive on several occasions, mentioned that the suitcase ended up “flopped over” from her movements. She began filming, expressing her desire to “take the time to talk” to Torres since he “was not able to get out,” allowing her to communicate with him “in a manner I ordinarily would not have the ability to do.”
Footage shown in court depicted Torres inside the suitcase, heard calling her name while Boone remarked, “For everything you’ve done to me,” as she continued to record.
During her testimony, Boone acknowledged that she was intoxicated, and claimed that the situation escalated quickly when Torres allegedly threatened her and “continued to push on the suitcase.”
When Torres’s hand supposedly emerged from the suitcase, she stated that she “shook” it as he tried to force his way out. In a “split-second reaction,” she grabbed a baseball bat to “poke his hand to go back in.”
Boone claimed she felt “safe” enough to turn the suitcase back over and insisted she left enough space for him to escape. She then went to sleep, only to find him dead in the suitcase the next day.
Boone, who was charged with second-degree m*rder after the incident, has pleaded not guilty.
