Anna Kendrick Discussed Her Position About Having Children

The Pitch Perfect star, 39, has always been candid about her views on parenthood. In her 2016 memoir Scrappy Little Nobody, she expressed, “Motherhood isn’t for me.”

During a recent interview with Flow Space published on Wednesday, Oct. 16, Kendrick reflected on a common phrase used by men when discussing their desire to have children in the future.

“I was thinking about a phrase I’ve heard men say when they talk about wanting kids, and it hit me: I’ve never heard a woman say that,” she said. “They’ll say something like, ‘Yeah, maybe one day — a couple of kids running around.’”

She added, “I don’t think I’ve ever heard a woman say that! Because it evokes a certain image, right?”

Kendrick explained that this “certain image” is one where a man comes home after work, sets down his briefcase, pours himself a cocktail, and sees his wife in a Laura Ashley dress tending to children playing in the yard.

She playfully questioned, “Um, where are you in that, sir?”

“I don’t know, something about that phrase really rubs me the wrong way,” she continued. “It’s like when husbands say they want to ‘help out’ with the kids. But both parents are working!”

Kendrick acknowledged that she sometimes feels like chiming in when she hears her friends talk about their parenting experiences but often holds back, saying, “Well, I’m the childless cat lady, so I’m not going to say anything.”

After JD Vance’s comments earlier this year about childless cat ladies, Kendrick told The Guardian, “I never think about having kids, so I guess I also don’t spend time weaponizing that.”

Reflecting on getting her pet cat, she humorously added, “Why would anyone trust me with a kid?”
