The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has categorically denied accusations that its officers assaulted protesters at Utako Market in Abuja yesterday.
In a press release from Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, the command described the claims as “false and misleading.”
The statement explained that police were deployed to the area following intelligence reports indicating that some individuals were attempting to exploit the protests as a cover for looting shops in the market.
The command emphasized that the officers’ actions were proactive measures intended to safeguard traders and deter criminal activities, rather than disrupt lawful demonstrations.
“As a responsible agency, we could not stand idly by and allow traders to be robbed of their hard-earned money and possessions without intervening,” the statement asserted.
The police urged the public to ignore any misleading information and reassured citizens that their rights to peaceful protests are upheld. The command also reiterated its dedication to maintaining public safety while protecting lives and property during civil demonstrations.
This response comes in light of social media reports alleging that police unjustly attacked peaceful protesters, raising public concern.
SP Josephine Adeh further stressed that the FCT Police Command is committed to ensuring the safety of all residents and will continue to fulfill its responsibilities with integrity.
