Meet Choi Soon-hwa, an 80-year-old model from South Korea, who has made headlines as the oldest contestant in the Miss Universe Korea pageant, competing alongside women young enough to be her grandchildren.
Choi expressed her determination to prove that age is no barrier to beauty, grace, and ambition.
“I want to surprise the world,” she told CNN ahead of the pageant’s grand finale. “People will wonder, ‘How is an 80-year-old so healthy? What’s her secret?’”
With her striking silver hair and undeniable confidence, Choi is set on showing that life after 80 can still be vibrant.
“While outer beauty is important, being at peace with yourself and respecting others is equally crucial,” she shared. She also emphasized the importance of maintaining a positive mindset, noting, “Too many people are negative these days.”
Born nearly a decade before the first Miss Universe pageant in 1952, Choi would have made history as the oldest contestant if she had won Miss Universe Korea, earning the chance to represent South Korea at the international competition in Mexico City this November.
Kim Chae-won ultimately won the Miss Universe Korea title on September 24. This year’s pageant marked a significant shift, as the Miss Universe organization lifted age restrictions for the first time, allowing women of all ages to compete.
This decision followed last year’s removal of bans on pregnant, married, and divorced contestants in an effort to embrace inclusivity.
Choi, who only began modeling at 72 to pay off debts, saw the age restriction change as a sign to take a chance.
“When the rule changed, I thought, ‘Why not give it a try?’ Whether I win or not, this is my opportunity to make a statement,” she said. Choi Soon-hwa’s journey has inspired many, proving that it’s never too late to chase your dreams.
