On Monday, September 23, an Osun State Chief Magistrates’ Court in Osogbo sentenced Sunday Ejoh, an aluminum worker, to six months in prison for stealing three tubers of yam.
Ejoh, who appeared before Magistrate Mr. M. Olatunji, faced one count of theft involving the yams valued at N3,000.
According to the prosecutor, Mr. Jacob Akintunde, Ejoh stole the tubers from Oluwole Durojaye on September 22, 2024. He noted that the stolen yams, along with a cutlass and a pair of slippers, were recovered from the defendant.
Akintunde explained that the offense was in violation of “Section 390(9) of the Criminal Code Cap 34 Vol. II Law of Osun State, Nigeria 2002.”
Without legal representation, Ejoh pleaded guilty, citing hunger as the reason for his actions. “I was hungry, and I have a family,” he told the court.
In delivering the verdict, Magistrate Olatunji found Ejoh guilty and sentenced him to six months in prison or a fine of N25,000. He also ordered that the stolen yams be returned to their owner.
