King Charles and Queen Camilla to Steer Clear of “Walkabout” Term During Upcoming Royal Tour

King Charles and Queen Camilla have decided not to use the term “walkabout” during their upcoming royal tour. The trip, scheduled from October 18 to October 26, will take them to Australia and Samoa.

Instead of referring to public engagements as “walkabouts,” the royal couple will describe them as “an opportunity to meet the public.”

The term “walkabout,” which originated with Queen Elizabeth II, is widely recognized by British royal watchers as an informal way for the public to interact with the royal family.

However, the change in terminology is intended to show respect for the Aboriginal community, who use the word to describe a traditional journey through the bush into the Australian Outback, often as a rite of passage.

During the tour, King Charles and Queen Camilla will focus on celebrating the best of Australia and Samoa while highlighting aspects of their work.

A Buckingham Palace spokesperson mentioned that Charles and Camilla had hoped to include New Zealand in their itinerary, but this was not feasible due to the King’s ongoing health issues.

The decision was made following medical advice and consultations with both the Australian and New Zealand governments.

While in Australia, King Charles will meet with Professors Georgina Long and Richard Scolyer to discuss advancements in melanoma research.

Meanwhile, Queen Camilla will concentrate on literacy and raising awareness of domestic and family violence.

She will also participate in a Queen’s Commonwealth Essay Competition workshop and engage with representatives of GIVIT in Canberra.
