A 38-year-old man, identified as Gabriel Iliya Magaji from Masaka, reportedly took his own life in Karu Local Government Area, Nasarawa State, due to financial hardship and suspicions of his wife’s infidelity.
It was reported that the father of three hanged himself with a rope inside a classroom at Crystal School, Masaka, on Monday, September 9, 2024.
According to a Facebook post, Magaji discovered that his friends allegedly had sexual relations with his wife in exchange for money, as he was unable to provide for his family due to the ongoing economic struggles in the country.
“When he confronted his wife, she reportedly admitted that she engaged in these acts because he couldn’t afford to support the family,” the post stated.
The wife allegedly claimed that his friends gave her money after sleeping with her, which she used to buy food for the family, including their three children and Magaji himself.
A local resident, Dan Alheri, suggested that Magaji was deeply hurt when he learned that his friends were attempting to “date” his wife.
The Nasarawa State Police Command’s spokesperson, DSP Nansel Ramhan, confirmed the incident on Wednesday, September 11.
“Around 7 a.m. on Monday, a staff member of Crystal School Masaka reported that an unidentified man was found hanging in one of the classrooms,” said the PPRO.
Upon receiving the report, the Division Police Officer (DPO) and his team arrived at the scene, untied the body, and took it to the General Hospital Mararaba, where a doctor confirmed his death. The body was subsequently deposited in the morgue.
While no suicide note was found, the police have launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of death. The police spokesperson also noted that he could not confirm if the suicide was linked to the allegations of infidelity involving the deceased’s friends.
